The Complete Guide to Kartell K-RAD Radiators

The Complete Guide to Kartell K-RAD Radiators

Designer heating, made simple: the complete guide to Kartell K-RAD radiators

A radiator used to be the thing you hid behind a cover. Not any more. The Kartell K-RAD collection turns heating into a genuine design feature - from whisper-slim aluminium panels and ornate Victorian cast iron to smart app-controlled electric models and sculptural heated towel rails. We stock the range in full at Essential Bathrooms, currently at 50% off RRP, so this guide walks you through everything you need to choose the right one with confidence.

If you already know what you're after, you can jump straight to the full Kartell heating collection. Otherwise, read on.

Which material is right for you? Aluminium vs steel vs cast iron vs electric

The material a radiator is made from changes how it heats, how it looks and how much it weighs. Here's the honest, plain-English version.

Aluminium - the fast, lightweight all-rounder

Aluminium is the star of the modern K-RAD range, and for good reason. It heats up in minutes, cools down just as quickly and responds almost instantly to your thermostat - which makes it efficient and easy to control. It's also remarkably light (some designs weigh under 3kg), so installation is straightforward even on stud walls, and it's fully recyclable. If you want contemporary looks and responsive heat, start here.

Mild steel - the classic flat-panel workhorse

Mild steel panel radiators like the Kartell Boston range offer that clean, familiar flat-panel look with strong, reliable output and excellent value. Available as single or double panel and in horizontal or vertical formats, they're a dependable choice for almost any room.

Cast iron - timeless character and lasting warmth

Nothing else has the presence of cast iron. It warms slowly and steadily, then keeps radiating heat long after the boiler has switched off - ideal for period homes, high-ceilinged rooms and anyone who loves a traditional look. The trade-off is weight (these are seriously heavy) and a longer warm-up, but the payoff is authentic character and heat that lingers.

Electric - heating without the pipework

Where running central-heating pipes isn't practical - a converted loft, a home office, a conservatory - electric is the answer. The Kartell Capri range adds smart WiFi control, voice operation via Alexa and Google Home, 7-day programming and open-window detection, so you get precise, standalone heating you can run from your phone.

Horizontal, vertical or towel rail? Choosing a format

Once you've settled on a material, think about shape and where it's going.

  • Horizontal radiators are the traditional choice - long and low, they sit neatly under windows and along walls. Browse the horizontal radiator collection.
  • Vertical radiators make the most of tall, narrow wall space - perfect for hallways, kitchens and anywhere floor-level wall space is at a premium. See the vertical radiator collection.
  • Heated towel rails do double duty: warm towels plus useful background heat for the bathroom. Explore the towel rail collection.

The Kartell K-RAD ranges at a glance

Aluminium designer radiators

This is where K-RAD really shines. Each range has its own character, so there's something to suit every interior:

  • Hamilton and Quebec - ultra-slim flat-panel designs in textured white, grey, black and bronze finishes.
  • Edmonton and Allegro - Edmonton's clean single-panel look and Allegro's elegant tubular column styling, both available as horizontal and vertical singles and doubles.
  • Aspen, K-Flat, Laser Klassic and Victoria - a spread of contemporary panel and column designs across a huge range of sizes and finishes.

All share aluminium's rapid heat-up, light weight and responsive control, and carry a 5-year guarantee.

Cast iron radiators

For period character, the Legacy column range and the ornate, Victorian-detailed Nostalgia range deliver authentic cast iron warmth. Both are supplied in a dark grey primer ready for overpainting in any colour you like, are built from joined sections so you can create almost any length, and come with a 10-year guarantee. Individual sections, feet, air vents, joining keys and retaining stays are all available too.

Electric radiators

The Capri range brings smart, app-controlled electric heating in both horizontal and vertical formats, from 1000W to 2000W, in gloss white or anthracite - no pipework required. Please note these are for standalone electric installation and should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Heated towel rails

Eight aluminium towel rail ranges cover every look and budget:

  • Manitoba - the versatile flagship, five heights and four finishes including bronze, with closely-spaced bars for maximum towel contact.
  • Alberta - minimal flat-bar styling, exceptionally light.
  • Abbotsford - bold deep-profile bars with high output.
  • Canmore - the slimmest at just 31mm deep, ideal for tight spaces.
  • Langley - the output champion, up to 3,884 BTU, powerful enough to be a room's main heat source.
  • Winnipeg - a statement piece with integrated natural wood shelves.
  • Maple and Timmins - sleek designer options in black and white respectively.

Browse them all in the towel rail collection.

How to size a radiator: BTU basics

Getting the size right matters - too small and the room never feels warm, too large and you waste energy. Radiator output is measured in BTU (British Thermal Units) at "delta T 60", the industry-standard comparison figure you'll see on every product page.

As a rough starting point, a typical living room needs more output per square metre than a bedroom because of larger windows and more open space, while north-facing rooms and those with lots of glazing need more again. A double-panel radiator delivers considerably more heat than a single of the same width - for example, a Boston double at 600 x 1470mm puts out around 7,790 BTU versus roughly 4,262 BTU for the single. If a room needs serious output, choose a double panel, a taller vertical or a high-output range like Langley. If you'd like a hand matching output to a specific room, just get in touch and we'll help.

Don't forget the valves

Radiator valves are almost always sold separately, so remember to add a pair to complete your installation. We stock the full Kartell valve range - thermostatic, manual, lockshield and drain-off options, plus angled and straight patterns in a choice of finishes - in the radiator valves collection. Thermostatic valves (TRVs) let you set the temperature room by room and are well worth it for comfort and running costs.
