AKW Tuff Form GRP wet floor former for level-access wet rooms

AKW Tuff Form Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Wet Floor Former

If you're planning a level-access wet room, the AKW Tuff Form is one of the most trusted wet floor formers on the market — but choosing the right size, waste and version can be confusing. This guide explains everything you need to know to order with confidence.

What is the AKW Tuff Form?

The Tuff Form is a pre-formed, pre-graded wet floor former — a strong tray that sits flush within your floor to create a seamless, step-free showering area. It removes the trip hazard of a bath or raised shower tray, making it ideal for accessible “bathroom for life” installs as well as modern family wet rooms. It's moulded from compressed GRP (glass reinforced plastic), is just 22mm deep, and accepts either vinyl safety flooring or tiles.

Tuff Form vs Tuff Form8: which do you need?

Both share the same strong GRP construction and lifetime guarantee. The difference is waste flexibility:

  • Tuff Form — the original, with a fixed waste position. Perfect for most standard installations.
  • Tuff Form8 — offers up to 15 waste-fit positions in a rotatable grid, plus a central-drain option. Choose this when joist positions are awkward, or you want a centred waste for a design-led layout.

What size do you need?

The Tuff Form comes in a wide range of sizes, from compact 900x900mm up to 1800x820mm, including popular rectangular options like 1200x900mm and 1500x820mm. A key benefit is that it can be trimmed to within 150mm of the waste without losing strength or water integrity — so you can fit it neatly to your room. Choose the size closest to (or just larger than) your intended showering area.

Choosing the right waste

This is where most people get stuck. Your former needs a compatible waste, and there are two decisions to make.

1. Gravity or pumped?

  • Gravity waste (e.g. TF75, GW50, GW19, GW90) — relies on natural fall beneath the floor to drain. The standard choice where there's enough depth below for the pipework.
  • Pumped waste (PGTF) — used where gravity drainage isn't possible, such as upper floors or where you can't achieve fall. It pumps waste water away.

2. Vinyl or tiled floor?

Your waste must match your floor finish. Vinyl floor wastes are designed to be welded/sealed to safety vinyl; tiled floor wastes (often stainless steel) suit a tiled finish. Always confirm the waste you choose states it's for your chosen floor type.

When you order a Tuff Form from us, you can simply select your waste option alongside the size — no guesswork.

Will it suit my floor?

The Tuff Form is suitable for both timber and concrete floors. Its ribbed underside prevents float and slippage during installation. For step-by-step help, see our guides on installing on a concrete floor and installing on a wooden floor, and our article on whether you can install a wet room upstairs.

How strong is it?

The Tuff Form supports up to approximately 60 stone (≈381kg), making it suitable for multi-user and assisted showering — a key reason it's specified so widely in the care and accessibility sectors.

Don't forget waterproofing

A wet room is only as good as its waterproofing. You'll need a tanking (waterproofing) kit to seal the former, walls and floor before applying your finish. This is essential to protect the structure beneath.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Tuff Form be tiled over?

Yes. The Tuff Form accepts both tiles and vinyl safety flooring — just be sure to pair it with the correct tiled-floor waste and tank it properly first.

Can I cut the Tuff Form to fit my room?

Yes. It can be trimmed to within 150mm of the waste without compromising its strength or water integrity, so it can be fitted to most room layouts.

What's the difference between the Tuff Form and Tuff Form8?

The Tuff Form has a fixed waste position and suits most installs. The Tuff Form8 offers up to 15 waste positions and a central-drain option for awkward joist layouts or design-led centred wastes.

Which waste do I need?

Choose gravity for standard installs with fall beneath the floor, or pumped where gravity drainage isn't possible. Then match the waste to your floor finish — vinyl or tiled.
