Choosing a Wet Room Shower Screen for Carer-Assisted & Wheelchair Showering

If you're fitting out a wet room for accessible or assisted showering, the shower screen does more than control splashes — it shapes how safely and comfortably the space works for the person using it, and for anyone helping them. Here's how to choose the right AKW wet floor screen around your access needs.

Start With the Access Need

Before looking at sizes and finishes, picture how the shower will actually be used. Is a carer assisting? Will the user transfer from a wheelchair or use a shower chair? Do they shower independently but need a safe, step-free space? Each scenario points to a slightly different screen.

For Carer-Assisted Showering

When a carer helps, a half height screen (750mm or 900mm) is usually best. The open top lets the carer reach in and assist while staying dry, and keeps the space uncluttered for two people. AKW's Option EW and Option BW are popular half height choices, many supplied with a matching curtain and rail. See the full range in our standard wet floor screens guide.

For Wheelchair and Shower-Chair Users

Step-free access is everything here. A wet floor screen paired with a level-access former removes the trip hazard of a tray, so a wheelchair or shower chair can roll straight in. A single deflector panel like the Option MW or a wide panel like the Option NW gives splash protection while keeping the area fully open for transfers.

For Independent Users Who Want More Privacy

If the user showers independently and prefers a more enclosed feel, a full height 1880mm screen offers the best splash control. Choose the practical Option HFW, or step up to the premium toughened-glass HFW Silverdale. Not sure between heights? Our half height vs full height guide breaks it down.

Glazing: PET or Toughened Glass?

For care settings and users at higher risk of falls, lightweight shatterproof PET (used on AKW's standard range) is reassuringly safe and won't shatter. Where a more premium look is wanted, the Silverdale range uses toughened safety glass in a grey aluminium frame. Both are built for daily accessible use.

The Base Matters Too

A wet floor screen only works over a properly graded, level-access floor. Pair your screen with an AKW Tuff Form or Tuff Form8 former for safe, step-free drainage.
