What Size Shower Tray Do I Need? Sizes, Shapes and How to Measure

Choose the wrong shower tray size and nothing else fits — not the enclosure, not the screen, not the space. This guide covers the standard UK sizes and shapes, how to measure, and the details people often miss.

Common shower tray sizes

Shape Common sizes Best for
Square 760, 800, 900, 1000mm Corners and small en suites
Rectangle 1000 x 800, 1200 x 800, 1200 x 900, 1400 x 900, 1600 x 800, 1700 x 800mm Alcoves, walk-in showers, replacing a bath
Quadrant 800, 900, 1000mm Corners where the curved front saves floor space
Offset quadrant 1000 x 800, 1200 x 800, 1200 x 900mm Corners where you want more elbow room

Sizes available differ by range, so check the options on each product.

How to measure

  1. Measure the width and depth of the space wall to wall, at floor level and again at about 1 metre high — walls are rarely perfectly straight.
  2. Use the smallest measurement. The tray should fit the space, with any small gaps taken up by the enclosure's adjustment.
  3. Check the door swing of the bathroom and the shower door, so both open fully.
  4. Note where the waste pipe runs and where it can drop through the floor or run to the soil stack.

Match the tray to the enclosure

Your shower enclosure or screen is sized to the tray, so choose them together. A 1200 x 800mm tray needs a 1200mm door or panel on the long side and an 800mm side panel. Enclosures have a small adjustment range to take up uneven walls, but they cannot make up for a tray of the wrong size.

Tray height, waste and floor

  • Low profile trays sit only a few centimetres high for a sleek, easy step-in. They need the waste to run in the floor or a riser kit to lift the tray.
  • Riser kits lift the tray so the waste can run above the floor — useful on solid concrete floors.
  • Waste position — centre, end or corner — affects where your shower head and screen go.
  • Anti-slip or slip-resistant trays give extra grip underfoot. They are a sensible choice for any family bathroom.

What size for a walk-in shower?

For a walk-in shower with a single fixed glass panel, a tray of at least 1200mm long gives enough room to step in and keep the spray inside. 1400mm and longer feels more generous and keeps more water off the bathroom floor.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular shower tray size?

For alcoves and replacing a bath, 1200 x 800mm and 1400 x 900mm are among the most popular. For corners, 900 x 900mm square and 900mm quadrant trays are common.

Can a shower tray go on a wooden floor?

Yes. The floor must be solid, level and well supported, and the tray should be bedded according to the manufacturer's instructions. A riser kit can help where the waste can't run in the floor.

Do shower trays come with a waste?

Some do and some don't. Check the product listing — many of our tray listings show whether the waste is included or offered as an option.
