Essential Pro Deck wet room floor former for tiled floors with pre-formed falls to waste

Introducing the Essential Wet Room Floor Former Range: Which Deck Is Right for Your Level-Access Shower?

Creating a level-access wet room used to mean compromises — on strength, on looks, or on how much of the budget went to the floor former alone. Our new Essential wet room floor former range is built to remove those compromises: four deck families covering tiled and vinyl floors, traditional and linear drainage, and every common shower footprint from 900x900mm up to 1800mm — all backed by a lifetime manufacturer's warranty on the tiled decks and priced to be seriously competitive.

This guide walks through the range and helps you choose the right deck — and the right drainage — for your project.

What is a wet room floor former?

A floor former (also called a wet room deck or tray former) is a rigid, pre-formed base that installs flush with the surrounding floor — into timber joists or a screed — to create a completely step-free showering area. The falls to the waste are built into the deck at the factory, so you get reliable drainage without hand-forming screeds on site. The result is a seamless, level-access shower: ideal for contemporary bathrooms, wheelchair-accessible wet rooms, and adaptations where stepping over a tray edge isn't an option.

First decision: tiled or vinyl?

Everything else follows from your floor finish.

  • Tiling the floor? You need a deck designed to be tiled directly onto — that's our Pro Deck family, in standard, linear-drain and concealed-edge versions.
  • Sheet vinyl safety flooring? Choose the Essential Trade Deck, engineered specifically for vinyl-finished wet rooms — the standard approach in care environments and many adaptations.

Essential Pro Deck — the all-rounder for tiled floors

The Essential Pro Deck is our core tiled-floor former, and one of the strongest available anywhere: precision manufactured in metal moulds from a unique resin compound, it accepts over 470kg point loading. At just 22mm thick it's self-supporting over standard joists with no full underboarding required, equally happy bedded into screed, and can be trimmed on site. The waste position is offset to avoid joists in most installations, and it comes in twelve sizes from 900x900mm to 1800x800mm — each with its own dimensioned drawing on the product page so you can check the fit before you order.

Essential Pro Deck Linear — the contemporary channel look

Prefer a sleek channel drain along one edge of the showering area? The Pro Deck Linear shares the same construction and 470kg-plus strength, with a pre-formed one-way fall to a linear drain slot. Sizes take either a 600mm or 800mm channel — the slot length is stated against every size in the dropdown, and if you add the matching Slimline Linear Drain from the same page, the correct channel length for your chosen deck is supplied automatically.

Essential Pro Deck Edge — our flagship, with invisible drainage

For the cleanest look of all, the Pro Deck Edge conceals the drainage against the wall entirely: a one-way fall carries water to a hidden edge channel, leaving a completely uninterrupted tiled floor. A unique factory-fitted waste can be repositioned along the channel by your installer to avoid joists — a genuinely clever solution to the most common headache in wet room installations.

Essential Trade Deck — outstanding value for vinyl wet rooms

The Trade Deck is compression-moulded from a high-glass-content SMC formulation, independently tested to 350kg point loading, and designed to be finished with sheet vinyl safety flooring. It installs onto timber joists or embeds into concrete — the ribbed underside bonds superbly into screed — and with prices from under £200 it makes a properly engineered level-access wet room achievable on tight budgets, whether that's a family bathroom or a grant-funded adaptation.

Getting the drainage right

The waste is where wet room orders most often go wrong — so we've made it hard to get wrong:

  • Tiled decks take our 50mm shower gulley topped with either a tileable insert (the waste all but disappears into the floor) or a stainless steel grate.
  • Vinyl decks take a clamping gulley — two-part or slim single-part — that seals the vinyl watertight.
  • Linear decks take the Slimline Linear Drain in 600mm or 800mm to match the deck's slot.
  • The Edge uses its own dedicated trap system.

On every Essential deck page you'll find a waste dropdown: pick your size, then either add the correct drainage in one click — the image updates to show you exactly what you're adding — or select “no waste needed” if you already have one. One order, one delivery, nothing incompatible.

All of our gulleys, grates, inserts and drains are also available individually in our Wet Room Drainage & Wastes collection.

Which size do I need?

Measure the showering area you want, not the room — formers are designed to sit within the floor, with tiling or vinyl continuing around them, and every deck in the range can be trimmed on site for a precise fit. If you're working to Document M or planning wheelchair access, larger footprints like 1200x1200mm and above give turning and transfer space; for a straightforward shower replacement, 1200x900mm remains the most popular choice. Each product page carries dimensioned drawings for every size, and our team is happy to check your specification before you commit.
