The AKW Tuff Form8 is the UK's most flexible level-access wet floor former — the successor to the original Tuff Form, which alone has clocked up over half a million installations. If you're planning a wet room on a timber or concrete floor and want a former that fits around your joists rather than forcing you to fight them, this guide covers everything: how the rotating waste plate works, every size AKW make, which waste option suits your floor, and how it compares with the other AKW formers.
The Tuff Form8 is a 22mm-thick wet floor former made from compression-moulded SMC-GRP (Sheet Moulding Compound – Glass Reinforced Plastic). It sits within your floor build-up to create a completely level-access showering area, finished with either vinyl safety flooring or tiles (with a tanking kit). Despite being light enough for one person to handle, it supports up to 60 stone (381kg) on timber joists — with unlimited support on concrete — and carries AKW's lifetime warranty. It's UKCA, CE and BS EN 14527 approved.
The headline feature is the octagonal rotating drain plate. Each 45° turn moves the waste outlet to a new position, which means:
In practice, that means the Tuff Form8 fits every UK joist pattern without notching or moving a single joist — and it's the reason installers love it. It also allows the increasingly popular central waste position for design-led wet rooms, with the octagonal plate maintaining a continuous 1:16 fall to the waste so water never pools.
AKW make nine sizes, from compact 900x900mm squares to a generous 1800x820mm walk-through:
| Size | AKW Code | Shape | Waste Positions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 900x900mm | 21130 | Square | Up to 25 |
| 1000x1000mm | 21131 | Square | Up to 25 |
| 1135x770mm | 21132 | Rectangular | 15 |
| 1200x1200mm | 21133 | Square | Up to 25 |
| 1300x820mm | 21134 | Rectangular | 15 |
| 1400x900mm | 21135 | Rectangular | 15 |
| 1500x820mm | 21136 | Rectangular | 15 |
| 1500x1200mm | 21137 | Rectangular | 15 |
| 1800x820mm | 21138 | Rectangular | 15 |
None of the sizes quite right? Every Tuff Form8 can be trimmed to within 150mm of the octagonal plate with standard tools, so custom sizes for alcoves and awkward rooms are easy — just remember cut edges must go against a wall and be fully supported.
The former is supplied without a waste, and choosing the right one comes down to two questions: what's your floor finish (vinyl or tiles), and can gravity drainage physically run from the waste to your soil pipe?
All twelve options — and the former-only route — can be configured directly on our AKW Tuff Form8 Wet Floor Former (All Sizes) listing, with every size and waste combination priced individually.
A few points from AKW's official fitting instructions worth knowing before you order:
AKW make four wet floor formers, and each earns its place:
Yes — any side can be trimmed to within 150mm of the octagonal drain plate using a circular saw or jigsaw, letting you create custom sizes. Cut edges must sit against a wall and be fully supported.
Yes, electric underfloor heating can be installed on top of the former — allow a slightly deeper floor recess for the elements.
Yes. It takes both tiles (with a tanking membrane) and vinyl safety flooring, and there are dedicated tiled-floor waste options with stainless tile-ready grates.
Up to 60 stone (381kg) on timber joists, and unlimited on properly screeded concrete floors.
The former is supplied without a waste so you can choose the right one for your floor — our listing offers twelve genuine AKW-supplied waste options across vinyl, tiled and pumped installs, or the former alone.
